What does Kneobase cost?

Kneobase is true Open Source Software and thus there are absolutely no licensing costs for using the software. This includes commercial usage on as many servers or clients or databases as you like.

How stable and mature is Kneobase?

The system has been in active Open Source development since 2004, with a beta version since 2005 as well; Kneobase also has 5 installations working and it has been deployed by a number of international companies and organizations for websites as well as for Intranet and portal applications. Is professional support available for Kneobase?

Who is coordinating the Kneobase development?

The development of Kneobase is officially coordinated by Colaborativa.net. An active Open Source community is participating in the Kneobase development and a number of solution providers around the world offer professional support for Kneobase.

What is the history of Kneobase?

Kneobase is based on ideas and history of azada ancient software developed and clear zetaclear deployed since 2002. The first version of Kneobase has been created and developed by Mariano Barcia and Colaborativa.net. From the beginning, Kneobase was thought out as an adaptive product using a flexible architecture to evolve. In the beggining of 2006, after deploying and using Kneobase successfully in several organizations, we have decided that the best way to continue is to share the product with the world through the internet, under the terms of a business-friendly license.

What license is used for Kneobase?

Kneobase uses the Apache 2.0 public license. This license is one of the most accepted Open Source licenses. It is verified as a "true" Open Source license by the Open Source Initiative (OSI). The full text of the license is available on the website of the Apache Software Foundation. For further information about the Apache license, please see the website of the ASF.

Does using the Apache license mean that all additions to Kneobase must be Open Source as well?

What is the difference between Kneobase and other enterprise search products?

The core of Kneobase is a server based on Lucene that allows access to many and varied content sources. This means that, besides tracking web pages and files, it can track databases, content management systems, version control systems, WebDAV systems, etc. Kneobase was designed to aggregate new sources with ease through extensions known as "drivers", and to provide results through a web service compatible with SOA.

What are the exclusive Kneobase's funtionality?

The possibility of centralizing many sources of content in a single knowledge base, with no need of publishing those sources to a web server. Kneobase also offers exclusive functionalities oriented the user, like autodetección of the language and specific search by types of file. In addition, it provides an API of searching and discovering meta-data based upon SOAP, which makes it compatible with SOA arquitectures.

Will the search results ranking system of Kneobase work effectively in an intranet environment?

The algorithms search of Kneobase are based on popular software Lucene. With an installed base of thousands in the world and with bearings to many other programming languages, Lucene is the software search of more mature open code of the industry..

Does Kneobase handle document-level security?

Yes. Kneobase provides ways to access source in a safe way, and filter documents based on security data and users rights.

¿Can Kneobase index NT, NFS, FTP and WebDAV file systems?

Yes. It can index file systems forming easily the diverse sources of content that is wanted to accede (name of folder or shared resource, or parameters standard of NFS, FTP or WebDAV).

Can Kneobase index Lotus Domino?

Yes. Kneobase can track data bases in Lotus Domino servers through the bookstore of access ODBC NotesSQL.

Can Kneobase index content management CMS and Wiki systems?

Yes. Kneobase directly tracks management systems of content like OpenCMS. For other systems CMS or Wiki, it is possible to be indexed through HTTP or developing a new one to driver through the SPI that offers Kneobase. At the moment, Kneobase is integrated to the JSPWiki system.

Does Kneobase integrate with corporate portal systems and SOA architectures?

Yes. The API that offers Kneobase allows to look for content of corporative portals and also to add other sources of content. With the simple SOAP API provided, it will be able to easily generate results that appear suitably in a corporative portal. These results will be able to also come from the other existing source and portal's data base of content in their Intranet. And, because of being a SOAP service, it can interact as a part of other, more complex, SOA interactions.

Does Kneobase search dynamically generated content?

The content shown dynamically in Internet comes in its majority of information structured in data bases. Kneobase tracks data bases by means of flexible queries, making possible to search over interactive applications like portals, e-learning systems, wikis, bugtracking or online collaboration systems.

Will Kneobase index non-web document types like Microsoft Office™ and PDF documents? Will it search within compressed archives, like ZIP or GZ?

Yes, Kneobase searches more than 20 types of files, turns them to HTML and it even emphasizes the important words of the results, which allows the users to visualize the archives with greater rapidity without having to open other desktop applications. In the case of files within compressed archives, Kneobase with no need shows the file to previously open the compressed file.
 
Can Kneobase index content in databases directly?

Yes. Kneobase can search more than 200 data bases like: Oracle, DB2, SQL Server SYBASE and MySQL.
